Bram De Looze / Jos Machtel / Matthias De Waele

The trio is formed by Bram De Looze (piano), Jos Machtel (bass) and Matthias De Waele (drums). These three jazz adepts met at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (Belgium). The first time they played together, they felt an instant connection and synergy, and decided to get as much as possible out of that. Notwithstanding their different backgrounds, they bonded over one common interest: the love for old "jazz standards". The trio wants to breathe new life into these old jazz standards. De Looze/Machtel/De Waele brings that music in a very refreshing and adventurous way: no one will be able to resist!…

JOS MACHTEL / double bass

Jos Machtel is one of the most successful Dutch bass players. Besides double bass, he also plays tuba and (valve) trombone. Jos has toured all around Europe, lived and played in Madrid and Kansas City and taught at several conservatories. He plays traditional jazz, as well as more modern styles. Some of the people Jos has played with are Deborah Brown, Sal Nestico, Lee Konitz and Woody Shaw.
Currently Jos has been working on a regular basis with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, performing with guest artists such as Maria Schneider, Kenny Werner, Kenny Wheeler, Philip Catherine, Dave Liebman, Gianluigi Trovesi, Chris Joris, Toots Thielemans and Bert Joris.
Furthermore he is a member of the "Benjamin Herman Trio", the "Herman/ Van der Grinten Quartet", "Joris Roelofs 4-tet" and Dick de Graafs "Jazz Meets Classic".
He also performs with the "Metropole Orchestra" on a regular basis.
His involvement with the Belgian scene has been steady for many years : besides his regular involvement with the Brussels Jazz Orcehstran, he also played with Nathalie Loriers, Michel Herr, Frank Vaganee, Kurt Van Herck, etc...

BRAM DE LOOZE / piano

Belgian pianist and composer Bram De Looze (°1991, Knokke-Heist) founds his way to jazz and improvisational music throughout his teens. In 2007 he started to work with a band called LABtrio. Consisting of Lander Gyselinck on drums and Anneleen Boehme on bass, this trio won the Belfius Axion Classics (2008) and Brussels Jazz Marathon (2009) competitions. In 2011 LABtrio won two main prizes on the European Tremplin Jazz d'Avignon festival.
In summer/autumn 2013 the first LABtrio album will come out, full of own compositional work.
Bram De Looze performed with Bert Joris, Dre Pallemaerts, Robin Verheyen, Nicolas Thys, Frank Vaganee, Brussels Jazz Orchestra with Maria Joao & David Linx, and a collaboration with bassist Greg Cohen for the Jazz Middelheim Festival. Bram was also part of the first Youth Jazz Orchestra, a three years project, working with arrangers and composers like Bob Mintzer, Pierre Bertrand, Florian Ross.
Bram De Looze's main teachers were Werner Meert and Hans Van Oost (music academy of Knokke 2003-2009), Ron Van Rossum (Lemmensinstitute 2009-2011).
Today Bram De Looze resides in New York, writing music for a new band coming up soon and also working his way through the New School with teachers like Marc Copland, Jacob Sacks, Charles Tolliver, Reggie Workman, Joanne Brackeen.

MATTHIAS DEWAELE / drums

Matthias De Waele was an early music adept. At the age of seven, his musical grandfather encouraged him to enroll at the Academy of Music and Word in Oudenaarde. He played the clarinet and learnt solfege. At the age of 13, he discovered a profound love for the drums. and enjoyed lessons from, among others, Ronald Dhaene, Tom Callens, Johan Sabbe and Jonathan Callens. After obtaining a master of science in Criminology he then decided to dedicate 100% of his time to music.
Matthias had the opportunity to play with, among others, Roni Ben-Hur, Thomas Decock, Richard Rousselet, Bas Cooijmans, Steven Delannoye, Lennart Heyndels, Peter Delannoye, Carlo Nardozza, Peter Hertmans, Joppe Bestevaar, Tom Callens, Manuel Dunkel, Bram Weijters, Hendrik Van Attenhoven, Rob Banken, Ellister Van Der Molen, Bob Wijnen, Ruben Lamon, Bart Vervaeck, Lieven Van Pee, Peter Beets, Stijn Wouters, Karel Cuelenaere, …
