20H - LAURENS SMET / HUGO ANTUNES

Een Belgisch-Portugees duo van twee contrabassisten die actief zijn binnen de Europese jazz- en improvisatiescene. 

Hugo Antunes kennen we vooral van Malus, zijn groep met Chris Corsano en Nate Wooley, en van zijn eigen Roll Call kwintet. Als sideman zagen we hem reeds aan het werk in groepen van Paul Lovens, Scott Fields en Rudy Trouvé.

Laurens Smet is vooral bekend van zijn werk met Ifa y Xango en Bambi Pang Pang (met Andrew Cyrille, Seppe Gebruers en Viktor Perdieus).

Antunes en Smet speelden eerder al in duo op uitnodiging van Sound in Motion in Antwerpen.

21H15 - CLAUDIA QUINTET

The Claudia Quintet is vernoemd naar een wildenthousiaste fan. Bandleider John Hollenbeck houdt ook van de naam omwille van zijn feminiene karakter. Geen machosolo's, egotripperij of arrogante houding, maar een zachtaardig bandgeluid zonder expliciete persoonlijkheden.

The Claudia Quintet speelt eigentijdse muziek in een wonderlijke bezetting, met onder meer vibrafoon en accordeon. Van surfrock tot breakbeats, van kamerjazz tot minimal music, de all-starband beweegt zich vloeiend tussen verschillende klankkleuren en de composities kennen verrassende wendingen.

Samenspel staat voorop en krachtpatserij wordt vermeden, met als resultaat een melodieus en rijk gedetailleerd groepsgeluid. Hollenbeck: "mijn muziek is voor het grootste gedeelte vrij van stijl of genre, het is muziek die voor zichzelf spreekt en die de luisteraars de vrijheid geeft om hun eigen ontdekkingen te doen."

In the Claudia Quintet, Hollenbeck has assembled a group of the foremost innovators in this new sound to create a powerhouse band. They are: Chris Tordini – bass (Tyshawn Sorey, Theo Bleckmann, Becca Stevens); Matt Moran – vibraphone (Slavic Soul Party, Mat Maneri, Nate Wooley); Red Wierenga – accordion (Respect Sextet, Signal, Brad Lubman); and Jeremy Viner – clarinet and tenor saxophone (Battle Trance, Steve Lehman, Bobby Avey).
